- A postcard sent to Miss Louise MacLeod in Middle River, Cape Breton, mailed from Oakfield, Nova Scotia. The Citadel, completed in 1856, is the fourth such fort to be built on the hill overlooking the harbour. The Citadel is symbolic of Halifax's role as a principal naval station in the British Empire.

"I am sorry not to have a letter for you. But lately I have been hustled about and have not got settled yet. When I reach F. I shall send a good letter. The Big Chief is spending the day with us & we go into Hx. tomorrow. I shall be in F. on Sat. Rec'd your two letters. Murray left the hospital on Sunday. Yours, R. [Rob Layton]" - Date of Original
