Terry Fox Run raises $75,000 Group participates for loved ones lost to cancer, and survivors By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR Their yellow T-shirts said it all. "I'm running for Spencer Bell, 1995-1997; Thomas Bell, 1923 to 2002; and Bill Grinton." Spencer Bell died at age two from leukemia, his grandfather Thomas Bell also died of cancer; and Bill Grinton is a survivor. Grinton was diagnosed with multiple myeloma - cancer of the blood and bone marrow - two years ago and was given stem cell therapy. His own stem cells were harvested and returned to his body in July 2001 at the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre, said his wife Laurie. Diagnosed in November 2000, stem cells were harvested and he was given "heavy doses" of chemotherapy. "Immediately after they trans planted the stem cells back into his body, they went to his bone marrow and he began producing red and white blood cells. It's like they cleaned him out, it was just amazing," said Laurie. Grinton, who has been "declared in remission," goes to the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre on a regular basis to have his blood tested and to receive bone strengthening treatments. `T his is the first time we've done the Terry Fox Run and we plan to make it an annual event," Laurie concluded. "I had the same kind of cancer that Roger Neilson, the former Toronto Maple Leaf coach, had. Tumours were forming in my bone marrow and I had cancer (cells) in my blood," he said. The group consisting of the Taylor, Eastman and Grinton families decided - almost at the last minute - to run, cycle and wheel in this year's 22nd annual Terry Fox Run held Sunday at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. The Grintons wore blue Tshirts with white labels. "I'm run ning for my husband," stated the one worn by Laurie. Daughter Olivia and son Matthew's shirts said "I'm running for my father," and Bill's shirt said he's running for his mother and a cousin who died of cancer, and a sister who is a survivor. Their shirts stood out among Peter C.
