The Town of Oakville has completed the Burnhamthorpe Road Character Study and Class EA and the study report is now available for public review for 30 days. This study was undertaken to develop a new road design for sections of Burnhamthorpe Road between Ninth Line and Sixteen Mile Creek. Burnhamthorpe Road is currently designated as a regional arterial road under the jurisdiction of Halton Region. However, the approved New North Oakville Transportation Corridor is expected to address future east-west travel demands in the vicinity of Burnhamthorpe Road, replacing the regional road function for this area. The remaining portions of Burnhamthorpe Road (see map) will be converted to a "character road", as described in the North Oakville East Secondary Plan (NOESP), to serve the growing north Oakville community. The overall preferred concept, presented in the final draft report, outlines the preferred road design for improving connectivity, accessibility and livability needed to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and motorists; enhancing the public realm and establishing a mix of uses to support the future growth of north Oakville. Additionally as directed by Oakville Council, staff will include a multi-use trail in lieu of a standard sidewalk within transitional areas along one side of the corridor during the detail design process.
