Art in the 6ix charitable event tonight to support young artists An Oakville Trafalgar High School alumnus is hosting a student-organized charitable art event in Toronto tonight (Thursday). "Art In The 6ix is a charitable art showcase featuring young, up-and-coming artists from the Greater Toronto Area," said Lindsay Hudson. "With the event's theme being Toronto Lifestyle, a variety of mediums will be up for auction with 100 per cent of all profits going towards Art for Children and Youth (AFCY) and the George Brown College Foundation." Hudson graduated from the local high school in 2009 and graduated from Western University with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Sociology in 2013. She now attends George Brown College's Special Events Planning program. Graduating in April, Hudson's final project is to plan an event and she decided to put on Art in the 6ix to benefit local charities. Fostering the arts AFCY is a Toronto-based charity that aims to provide children and youths in under-resourced communities with the tools necessary to foster education and engagement in the arts. Its primary goals are to help children develop personal and artistic skills, provide a venue to develop the youth's stake in the community and provide meaningful mentorship opportunities which may lead to gainful employment. The George Brown College Foundation supports post-secondary students attend college with scholarships, bursaries and awards. The charity ensures no student is denied an education at George Brown College (GBC) due to financial constraints. "Art In The 6ix aims to help more young artists feel supported in their community as well as providing them the tools and skill set to thrive as an artist," said Hudson. "This event allows us to give back to our school and will help future students be part of the program, thus giving them the opportunity to plan their very own event to a nonprofit of their choosing." Art In The 6ix is an age 19-plus event, with a cash bar, raffle prizes, appetizers, desserts and musical performances -- all of which will take place from 7-10 p.m. at 99 Sudbury St. in Toronto. Tickets cost $20 for George Brown College students and $25 for general admission. Held at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre's (QEPCCC) Black Box Theatre, 2302 Bridge Rd., the show combines theatre and sports as it pits teams of improvisers against each other in a battle of wits and laughs. This week, Terri Skov, Christine Pillman and Robin Sadavoy fall in and out of love with their competitors Jeremy Butler, Jennifer Silvestro and Shann McGrail. The special guests for the evening will be Moist Theatre, featuring Dana Schiemann, with Carson Gale, Cliff Murphy, Ben McCutcheon and Colin Murphy; and Second City alumnus Jack Mosshammer. The event is scored by musical director Jordan Armstrong and hosted by Amy McKenzie. The show starts at 8 p.m. and general admission costs $5.
