f& fo C c r n e r The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 6, 2003 -1 3 PATCH it up with pet pals Oakville school children will hopefully take up this pet project. Thanks to a donation to the Oakville & District Humane Society (ODHS) made by local Oakville Toyota and Lexus dealer Frank Apa, the `Patch Challenge' education program has been creat ed as a tribute to the dog it honours. Patch was a well-known Shih Tzu dog owned by Frank Apa. He was a company pet, mascot and corporate spokes dog who had an integral role at his owner's dealer ships. When Patch passed away in August 2002, Apa decided to hon our his pet by dedicating September to Patch's memory. Over the month, $100 per vehi cle sold was put toward a charitable fund for the ODHS. By the end of the month $13,300 had been raised from the sale of 100 vehicles and additional contributions from sup pliers and friends. "When we heard about the story of Patch we knew that he would be an ideal role model to use when teaching children about positive people-animal relationships," stat ed Heather White, Community Services Coordinator at the ODHS and coordinator of the Patch Challenge. Approximately 5,000 school children a year currently participate in classroom humane education programs. During this school year, the Patch Challenge asks schools to by a teacher or parent, will be sent recognition for their efforts. Submissions may be made through the Patch page at www.oakvillehumane.ca or by mailing or faxing to the ODHS. The program runs between September and June giving each school and student time to fully implement the Patch message. The school that demonstrates the strongest support, through classroom participation and sub missions of acts of kindness, will be acknowledged at the ODHS Annual General Meeting in June. The win ning school will receive The Patch Challenge plaque and a book dona tion about animal care for their library. Individual acts of kindness sub mitted to the ODHS will also be reviewed and one student will be recognized for his/her understand ing o f the important message behind the Patch Challenge, as demonstrated by their act. "We hope that the Patch Challenge will become an annual initiative," stated White. "If we can motivate children to be kind to ani mals (and people) on an on-going basis it will become second nature to them. Everyone benefits from this program." For more info about the Patch Challenge contact Heather White at the Oakville & District Humane Society, 905-845-1551, 445 Cornwall Road, Oakville (just east of Trafalgar) Fax: 905-845-1973. Pet of the Week Olivia is a very attractive Domestic Short Hair. She is brown tabby and white, approximately four years old, and is already spayed. She came from a multiple cat household so she would suit living with another cat. She is a shy, gentle cat who would benefit from a calm socially outgoing cat to interact with. Her new family will need to be patient and give her time to adjust to her new surroundings. Society staff and volun teers are pleased to report that Marvin has a new home with a dog to play with. Lucy, the dog profiled last week, is still waiting for her home. If you are inter ested in adopting any of the animals at the Oakville & District Humane Society, come down and visit, or con tact the shelter at 905 845-1551. M i Ho Platt Like Home invite the ODHS into their class rooms and to complete age-appro priate kindness tasks provided by the curriculum. "The Patch Challenge will teach children that: People and Animals Together Create Harmony (PATCH)," added White, who is optimistic that the message of kind ness to animals will infiltrate into the children's personal relation ships, as well. To encourage participation in the Patch Challenge, the ODHS staff will provide a number of incentives both to teachers (a teach ing manual, a monthly draw for a free Patch T-shirt, a free pencil, easy on-line registration) and to their students (colouring books, crayons, and stickers).
