The planting will be held in the park at the bottom of Wilson Street from 9 11:30 a.m. "With your help, an already beauti ful place in Oakville will become a spectacular restoration of the way it may very well have been hundreds of years ago," exclaim ed Stephen Dankowich, Executive Director o f the O akville Com m unity Centre For Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR). Paul O 'H ara, local ecologist and guide for OCCPEHR's semi-annual series of nature walks since 1996, has exclusively studied this area. "At the crest of the hill you will gain an amazing view of the lake. Here there are a number of large original trees including Red Oak, White Oak, Black Oak, and Sugar Maple. We will create a garden composed of native prairie and savannah flora," remarked O 'Hara. "Records of historical vegetation indicate that a mosaic of prairie, oak savannah and oak woodland was pres ent along the Iroquois Sand Plain throughout the O akville area. Therefore, this site is very suitable to such a garden. The soils are sandy and the aspect is south facing. The presence o f the Black Oak at the site indicates that this area once supported prairie and savannah ground vegetation," added O'Hara. Thanks to a $600 donation from the TD Friends o f the Environment Foundation, OCCPEHR will be pur chasing 720 plants for the naturaliza tion. These will include Black-Eyed Susan, Wild Bergamot, Butterfly Milkweed, Smooth Penstemon, and either an Aster or Goldenrod. Paul O 'Hara is also donating wild-collected seed of appropriate native species for broadcasting at the site. The Town of Oakville Parks and Recreation depart ment is assisting in the advance prepa ration of the site and is donating peat moss and wood chips. Volunteers can just show up at the planting in sturdy shoes, and with sun screen, a hat, and water. "We are so pleased to have this opportunity to bring back more of the original, Carolinian Canada flora to Oakville as it promotes our ongoing Oakville Environmental Awareness Project," concluded Dankowich.
