The squad, named in Calgary on Thursday after Evan M cG rath a week-long try out camp, will compete in the U-18 Junior World Cup in the Czech Republic, August 11-16. Canada will be shooting for its eighth straight win, having won the previous seven. Many o f these U-18 players will move on to play with Canada's national junior team, and many will be high NHL draft picks in 2004. Two years ago, McGrath suited up for the Oakville Blades, leading the team in scoring and being selected as the west conference rookie o f the year. Now, he's also a regular at the O ntario M artial A rts C entre in Oakville. Last Saturday, Elvis lent a hand teaching at the school. T hat's w here Stojko, for his entire adult career, has gotten his blades sharpened by Paul Fisher. And usual ly after a sharpening, w hether it's figure skaters or a m inor hockey team practicing on the ice, they're only too happy to have the form er world cham p test out the blades. Last Saturday, how ever, Stojko was front and centre in O akville in a different sport -- m artial arts. Stojko, o f course, is a well known practitioner o f the m artial arts, even incorporating som e o f the m oves into his on-ice program . For advanced students o f m artial arts, it's very com m on to give back to the new er students. And that's what Stojko was doing. He is a student o f a particular m artial arts discipline that is offered at the O ntario Centre for M artial A rts ( OCMA) in O akville called H un-G ar Kung Fu. Stojko along with several other instructors at the Jing Mo club ju st popped in to lend their support to other OCM A m embers. One thing you can be sure of, is that it was probably one o f the most well attended classes ever. "We m ust have had 150 people h ere," said the O CM A 's Sean Stew art who was inducted into the O akville Sports Hall o f Fame earlier this year. Stew art said Stojko is not ju st an am azing athlete, but more im portant ly an am azing role model. " It was very su ccessful," said Stewart. HAC tourney The Halton A thletic Cl ub baseball organization is hosting a m ajor tour nam ent this weekend at the Ninth Line diam onds, ju st north o f Dundas Street (Hwy. 5). The nine-team tournament, spon sored by Franklin Sports, will show case some o f the very best Canadian and U.S. elite teams. The Halton team is fresh off the cham pionship title at the G atesAmerica Freight International Wood Bat in Milton, where HAC defeated the Canadian Thunderbirds 6-4, for the gold medal. The win was sweet payback for the HAC U-20 squad who came up short the last time the two Canadian Elite Baseball Conference (CEBC) teams met in championship play. Oakville's Matt Wood was the tour nament MVP, with his sterling defen sive work, including a spectacular div ing catch in the 7th inning to snuff out a late rally by the senior Thunderbirds.
