"We always live in fear of that. We want to make sure we are doing everything we can, should that ever happen," said mom Heather Anderson of Oakville. This is why the family and its Fighting for Liam Brigade has announced a $50,000 fundraising goal for 2015. The funds will go to The James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research to sponsor the Drug Discovery Project at the Hospital for Sick Children, which works toward finding experimental treatments. Neuroblastoma is a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system that usually affects infants and young children. Neuroblastoma can develop anywhere in the body, but most often occurs in the adrenal gland. Other sites include the neck, chest, spinal cord or pelvis. Signs and symptoms of the disease will vary with the location. It is the third-most common pediatric cancer (behind leukemia and brain tumours). About 50 to 75 children are diagnosed in Canada each year. Children with high-risk neuroblastoma, like Liam, have a 50 per cent survival rate.
