A2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 8, 2004 Salvation Army opening Toy Depot at Hopedale Shopping Centre The Salvation Army Christmas Toy Depot - one of the happier initiatives car ried out by the church this season - offi cially opens on Saturday at Hopedale Shopping Centre. According to Community Services Co ordinator Aisha King, the program is only successful thanks to the generosity of the public and to Hopedale Shopping Centre for providing the venue. "The operation of the Toy Depot throughout December is always a joyful time," said King. "Many thanks to Hopedale Shopping Centre for their sup port, outreach to the community and donation of an ideal location." Mayor Ann Mulvale will staff a Christmas kettle starting at 11:30 a.m. to help officially open the Toy Depot, the annual Salvation Army initiative which brings a little joy to more than 1,000 area children, from infants to those aged 16. The Salvation Army Oakville Community Church Band will also be on hand. Passing through the site, registered clients (who must reside in Oakville to receive services) pick out gifts and stock ing stuffers from donations labeled according to gender and age. "The Depot gives parents a chance to put a smile on their kids' faces," said King. To register, call Diane at 905-827-6523. The Toy Depot cannot work without donations, so these are always welcome, especially gifts appropriate for teenagers. Volunteers to help out in the Depot are needed as well. The Salvation Army is also collecting money to cover the cost of the Christmas voucher program. This initiative, which replaced the traditional Christmas ham pers, offers families the chance to sit down to a real holiday dinner by providing chits worth $25 per adult and $15 per child. Because of the different cultural back grounds of clients, vouchers rather than a turkey dinner allows them to buy whatev er they want.
