They wanted to get married in Oakville too, since Logan is chair of the Halton Pride Committee and the Oakville Diversity Working Group, and is involved with several other local organizations. There were no available ministers to perform the ceremony June 13 in Oakville though, so they went to Guelph, where one was free, and cemented the bond symbolized by the rings they exchanged more than 14 years earlier. When they returned to their Waterdown home, they were met in the street by their neighbours, who offered congratulations and welcomed them to mar ried life. Legislation to make same-sex marriages recog nized nationwide, however, is under attack by many politicians in the area, leaving Powell and Logan wrestling to comprehend the arguments that would keep couples like them from the ideal instilled by their parents. "My parents are married, his parents are mar ried," said Logan. "We were taught that was the ultimate commit ment" added Powell. Why they weren't previously allowed to have that commitment recognized on the same plane as straight couples was frustrating for them. However, they were resigned to the notion they wouldn't ever see the day when they would be in possession of a marriage licence.
