The Oakville Beaver, F rida y A u g u s t 22, 2003 - 5 Freedom was fleeting for escaped suspect A 22-year old man who escaped police custody Tuesday afternoon enjoyed less than a day of free dom before being picked up once again. This incident started around 4:25 p.m. when Halton Regional Police officers responded to a complaint of a man wielding a stick and threaten ing people at a townhouse complex located at 1160 Dorval Drive. He was arrested for violence-related offenses and placed in a cruiser to be transported to the Oakville 20 Division station. While enroute, the handcuffed man managed to kick out the back window of the car, leaped out and escaped. The subsequent investigation led police to the plaza at Dorval Drive and North Service Road, just south of the townhouses, where he was found in the parking lot around noon Wednesday. The man had managed to cut the links on the hand cuffs, but was still wearing the bracelet portions. On Wednesday, Bureau members together with Oakville D istrict uniform officers and Identification Bureau investigators executed a search warrant at 2185 Eighth Line. There they discovered in the basement 72 marijuana plants worth $72,000 and $7,000 worth o f hydroponics equipment. Phi Hiep Nguyen, 35, o f Dundas Street, Mississauga has been charged with producing a controlled substance and possession for the pur pose of trafficking.
