Van is home to woman and her cats Homeless woman can' t bear to part withfurry friends By Paula Henriques O A K V IL L E B E A V E R S T A F F Elisabeth Reiss lives in her van with her eight best friends. T here's Timbit, Angel, Lucifer, Montana, Tinkerbell, Daisy, Phoenix and Little Foot-Pebbles. Her four legged companions share her cramped quarters after her world finally crum bled in May after years of struggle. Boxes are piled high in her dark blue Ford Aerostar that contain cloth ing, shoes, food and important docu ments. Though it is a small space, she has made it as much of a home as she could. There's a potted perennial on the passenger seat and non-perishable food items organized in boxes. The car is clean and well kept. For her dear cats she has trans formed the back seat and cargo area of the van into their living space. Surprisingly, with eight cats the area is very clean and with only a slight odour. The cats -- beautiful Persians, domes tic and mixed breeds -- appear to be in good health. These are just some of the adjust ments he has had to make. She's also had to learn how to sleep in an uncom fortable driver's seat, wear the same clothes three days in a row, washes in a gas station sink in three minutes and eat peanut butter sandwiches every day. Though she realizes her situation could be made a little easier by giving away some of her pets, Reiss explains that she has had to give up enough in her life and she loves them too much to let them go. "I've had them for years. 1 rescued them. They were strays and I nursed many back to health. They are all five to 10 years old. No one wants mature cats," she said, then adds, "They love me."
