B4 - The Oakville Beaver, Tuesday December 21, 2004 Delisting of chiropractic services 'not properly thought through' - Tory By W ilm a Blokhuis OAKVILLE LIVING EDITOR The delisting of chiroprac tic services from the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) coverage w ill drive up health care costs, says John Tory, leader of Ontario's Progressive Conservatives. The delisting was effective Dec. 1. Tory was in town last week attending an open house at the Oakville Family Chiropractic, where his niece, chiropractor Dr. Tara Pearce, joined the staff about three months ago. "I'm here to show my sup port for Tcira," he said. Tory did not speak to the crowd gath ered at the clinic for a wine and cheese reception, but answered questions. The delisting of chiroprac tic services " is one of a num ber of decisions that have not been properly thought through," said Tory. "In the end, the cost to have chiropractic services not cov ered by OHIP w ill only drive up health care costs," he said, as people w ill no longer seek out the services of a chiroprac tor and "once they're in a lot of pain," end up at their family doctor "for help which is cov ered by OHIP. "People w ill end up missing work which hurts productivity and the economy." Calling the decision "unwise," Tory said coverage of chiropractic services by pri vate health care plans in the United States "has made a very substantive difference in health and (the rate of) absen teeism. People are less likely to be absent from work. " Having (OHIP coverage for) this service abruptly can celled in Ontario was done unilaterally, without consulta tion." Tory said, in a similar deci sion, optometrists were delist ed effective Nov. 1, " resulting in people with eye problems delaying their visit because they can't pay. "These decisions w ill cost the health care system more money than the saving from OHIP," concluded Tory. The provincial government hopes to save up to $200 m il lion over two years with this move, ending 30 years of cov erage for chiropractic services. The Ontario Chiropractic Association says, "patient visits to family doctors and hospital emergency rooms w ill increase by hundreds of thou sands, and this w ill incur m il lions of dollars in new health care costs. " Increased costs to the health care budget range from a minimum of $12 m illion to an estimated maximum of $125 million per year in net costs, as former chiropractic patients seek more expensive (and fully OHIP-insured) care from family doctors, walk-in clinics and emergency rooms." Pearce joins chiropractor Dr. Paul Zmiyiwsky, natur opath Dr. Malanie Labelle, and massage therapist Michael Zimmermann at Oakville Family Chiropractic, 150 Randall St., Ste. 101,905-3379885. A multidisciplinary clinic, it has X-ray facilities on site and is one the few clinics in Oakville to have a digital spinal scanning machine which pro vides a non-invasive way to obtain an image of the spine. This machine is called the sub luxation station and is the most current, up-to-date equipment in the chiropractic field. ASHLEAW E SS EL / SPEC IALTOTH EOAKVILLE B E A V E R STRONG BACKING: Dr. Tara Pearce, a chiropractor at Oakville Family Chiropractic, takes a digital scan of her uncle John Tory's spine. Tory is leader of the Opposition and Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. He was in Oakville recently to support his niece in her new practice. He said the delisting of chiropractic services from OHIP coverage will result in higher health care costs in the long run.
