www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, November 14, 2014 | 26 Family members will each fulfill a personal dream continued from p.22 When asked how they felt about their world voyage, both revealed it was nothing short of exciting. The same could not be said, however, for the schoolwork they're expected to do, the pair admitted. "They are excellent students and I think they're going to have a fantastic education for the year. But are they excited about it (the schoolwork)? Probably not," Jennifer said with a laugh. Elizabeth and Jack are both students at Oakville's École Forest Trail (EFT) Public School, in Grades 5 and 2, respectively. In planning their trip, their parents were in constant contact with EFT and Jennifer said she did a lot of research in order to incorporate the Ontario curriculum with the activities set for their world adventure. "Their principal (Steve Pilibbossian) was really excited about it all, especially after a Grade 5 and Grade 2 teacher (at the school) volunteered to take on Elizabeth and Jack as virtual students," said Jennifer. What that entails is Elizabeth and Jack will create videos or write in their blogs and Paul has always wanted to go to Greece, so we're doing that for a month. Elizabeth wanted to go swim with dolphins and zip-lining, so that's what we're doing in New Zealand. And Jack really wanted to see the Sydney Opera House and go on safari. We made sure we incorporated all the things we wanted to do in our travels -- mine was like Jack's, taking a safari in Africa. For instance, in Jack's case, Jennifer learned one of the units in his Social Studies subject was Communities Around the World. While he is in Cambodia, Jack will discuss what life is like in the communities and send it back to his teacher at EFT, who will then show it to his classmates and use it as a springboard into a discussion about that particular unit, said Jennifer. "The principal, school and school board have been very supportive and amazing," noted Paul. Since Elizabeth and Jack are in the French Immersion program, EFT and the Halton District School Board put their parents in touch with a French resource teacher to help give them the material they would need for the school year. Half a decade of planning Having spent nearly five years researching, reading books and speaking to other people, Jennifer said her family sat down together to come up with the itinerary for their trip and figure out where each of them wanted to go. And Jack really wanted to see the Sydney Opera House and go on safari," said Jennifer. "We made sure we incorporated all the things we wanted to do in our travels -- mine was like Jack's, taking a safari in Africa." The Turner family arrived in Auckland, New Zealand yesterday (Thursday, Nov. 13) after a four-day stay in Honolulu, Hawaii. Some of the stops on their world tour include: San Francisco, Las Vegas, San Diego, Australia, celebrating Christmas and New Year's in Bali, Vietnam, Malasia, Thailand, Paris, France and London, England. "I'm most excited about New Zealand and swimming with the dolphins and zip-lining," said Elizabeth. "I'm just really excited to go there. It's an experience many kids don't get to do." While Jack said he's most looking forward to Australia and visiting Alcatraz. "I heard and read it's a really neat place to see." The last leg of their voyage, which, it total, spans approximately 20 different countries across five continents, will take them to Iceland. Elizabeth and Jack have put up a video of their trip to San Francisco on the Turner family's travel blog at www.travelpod.com -- type "turnerstravels" in the search bar. The blog will also detail the Oakville family's trip from start to finish.
