The 94-year-old served in a 1st Canadian Division artillery unit between 1940 and 1945, fighting at both the Battle of Ortona and the final Battle of Monte Casino. "When I left home, I said to my mother, `I'll see you in a year,' but it was five years and two months later when I saw her," said Gibb, who grew up in Montreal but has called Oakville home for 57 years.
