Chances are also good that it might even be you. Perhaps best known for its work with the Great Dream Home Family Lottery, the CFO is behind many important initiatives in Oakville, contributing to the quality of life in our community - now and for generations to come. You see the effect of the CFO in healthcare and social services, in arts and culture, in programs for youth and the environment. Since 1994, the CFO. its donors and programs, have made donations of more than $5.1 million to ini tiatives that contribute to the wellness of our commu nity. our neighbours, family and friends. In the sim plest sense, the foundation brings together people who want to make a difference in our community and people who need a helping hand. Connecting good people with good causes is how the CFO helps improve life in Halton region. Imagine the thrill of learning that you've won a fabulous new home through the Great Dream Home Family Lottery. In one moment your life changes. The dream of living mortgage-free comes true. Yet by simply buying a ticket you're also making someone else's dream come true: a chance to escape from an abusive relationship, the gift of independence with help from a special skills dog guide, faster and better diagnostic services at the hospital and so much more. Because the CFO - like all community founda tions - works behind the scenes, people often aren't aware of it, or what it means to our community. There are 130 such foundations across Canada and meas ured by its assets last year, Oakville's is the 13th largest. Community foundations are independent of each other and set up as non-profit organizations to support programs of importance close to home. This flexible mandate helps the CFO target and support those char ities and programs that can slip through the cracks because they aren't heard from as often as other bigticket, celebrity endorsed causes. Through the guidance of a volunteer board of directors, the CFO is building permanent funds to benefit Oakville and Halton exclusively. It offers a full range of donation alternatives and helps donors at all levels to invest in the health and vitality of our town. The foundation addresses Oakville's short-term and future needs and focuses on the big picture. A community foundation collects donations of any amount from individuals, businesses and other foun dations and pools dollars in permanent endowment funds. These funds are invested to generate a constant stream of earnings for grants to a wide range of local community programs. For donors the advantages of making gifts to the community foundation include flexibility in how to direct a donation, maximum tax savings and the ben efit of experienced pooled fund management. By getting tickets in the lottery, making a contri bution directly or just using the wide-range of social services available just outside your door, you, too, are involved in making Oakville and Halton region a great place to live, work and raise a family.
