Kindly fill out and forward. YOUR NEIGHBOUR Gary Carr easily won a third term as Halton Region chair in Monday's municipal election with a firm hold on 80 per cent of the vote across Halton. "Our whole team was focused on keeping Halton the best, and we have a great staff, great council and what we said all along is that we wanted to keep it that way and wanted to keep our taxes low, invest in the infrastructure. This is really a validation of what we've been doing over the last few years and we wanted to continue that," Carr told the Oakville Beaver, shortly before the last few poll results came in. "We're obviously very pleased with the overwhelming support that we got and that's not only a tribute to the great staff, but all the great councillors we have at the Region, so we're going to be able to continue with that. "This allows us to YOUR NEIGHBOUR continue with the program that we've had for the last few years and obviously, we really appreciate all the support from all four of the municipalities." Carr, whose challengers didn't even break the double-digit mark on the percentage of votes earned, campaigned with an eye to keeping taxes low and services efficient. "Halton has the best job creation record in all of Canada and we need to continue job creation with a chair that has a proven track record of attracting jobs to the area," said Carr, 59, a resident of Milton. Carr touted experience and leadership as qualities he has demonstrated throughout his 24-year political career as an MP , MPP , legislature speaker and regional chair. Before entering politics, Carr played professional hockey in the American Hockey League (AHL) and International Hockey Gary Carr League (IHL) and was the goalie for the 1975 Memorial Cupwinning Toronto Marlies. "I have frozen taxes for eight years and increased the amount spent on roads from $50 million, when I became chair, to $289 million this year." "Halton also has the lowest unemployment rate in Canada and I'm proud that Halton has been named the safest region in Canada for seven straight years." In his campaign, challenger Syed A. Naqvi, an Oakville resident, put forward a 24-point plan for Halton. Naqvi had unfettered growth in his sights as well as gridlock, connecting public transit across Halton, the rate of tax growth and reducing the cost of regional government. With 26 years of experience working in senior public management positions in Canada and abroad -- and volunteering -- Naqvi, who currently works with Canada's Department of National Defence (DND), said he's familiar with both urban and rural issues. Oakville resident John Paulic, who also challenged Carr, said job creation, spending and infrastructure are the key election issues for the regional chair's job. An information technology (IT) specialist, Paulic campaigned that saving money and managing spending through his work would make him a good regional chair. To attract more jobs to Halton, Paulic said he would consider giving larger-sized companies a tax break. Expanding roads and resolving gridlock to accommodate a growing population was another important issue for Paulic. Regional chair candidate Greg Woodruff of Burlington was impassioned by the issue of intensification as he made his bid for the chair's office. A married father with a young daughter, he grew up in Burlington and owns his own business.
