Halton chair candidate John Paulic plots job creation strategy by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver 7 | Thursday, October 23, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com For Oakville resident and Halton Regional chair candidate John Paulic, job creation, spending and infrastructure are top-of-mind issues in the upcoming municipal election. Set for Monday (Oct. 27), the election pits Paulic against incumbent Gary Carr, fellow Oakville resident Syed Ali Naqvi and Greg Woodruff of Burlington. Paulic, who is an information technology (IT) specialist, says saving money and managing spending through his work would make him a good regional chair. "I am working for the taxpayer. They're not working for me. I'm responsible to them. I'm spending their money. It's the same thing with the corporation I'm working for. I'm spending the corporation's money," said Paulic. "I have to be careful where I spend it. We have to make sure we're getting a good value for the dollar." To attract more jobs to Halton, Paulic would consider giving larger-sized companies a tax break. "It's such a competitive market because everything is globalized. We have to do something creative to keep the businesses locally. Any time you talk about giving businesses a tax break, people don't like it, but it's going to keep people employed," said Paulic. The Oakville resident said the number of "massive warehouses" along Hwy. 401 that take up significant land and employ a small number of people are not making it "worthwhile for everybody." "I know it's good for the builders, but we're not really getting our money's worth. We have to make sure enough industrial land is available for businesses to come in," said Paulic. Expanding John Paulic roads and resolving gridlock in the region to accommodate a growing population is another important issue for Paulic. He said the cost of fixing both would get more expensive "if we keep waiting." "We all want to save money, but we also have to invest. It's not going to get any cheaper to make the roads since it's asphalt and asphalt is based on the cost of the oil," said Paulic. The Province's regional transportation agency Metrolinx plans to address congestion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) in The Big Move -- a 25-year and $50-billion plan to tackle gridlock and improve transportation access. While Paulic thinks it's a great idea in theory, he said, "We will have to find out how it's going to work for everybody." "Milton has a very small public transit system, Georgetown and Halton Hills have no public transit. As far as they're concerned, they don't want it," said Paulic, who moved to Oakville from Georgetown 10 years ago. "When I was up there, nobody wanted it. They didn't want to talk about it." One of the reasons Paulic and his family left Georgetown was because of congestion, he said, and moving to Oakville reduced his time on the road to get to work. "If we can get big businesses here so people can work locally, then they can bicycle to work, walk to work or take the local bus. But right now, we're all either going to Toronto or up north," said Paulic. While Paulic will serve the public and "try to make a difference" if elected next month, the IT specialist is only looking to serve two terms at most, he said. "I don't see myself taking 20 years to figure something out. I don't want to be a professional politician. I think everybody should have the opportunity to try it at some level. In life, if you don't try something, you're going to regret it later on." FLOOR MODEL CLEARANCE SALE!!!
