Matthew Soutar scored with six minutes remaining in regulation time as Oakville survived an early red card to goalie Tomas Tobak to blank the Burlington Bayhawks 1-0 in the provincial U16 boys' Tier 2 championship game Sunday at Oshawa's Civic Stadium. "We were almost hoping to get to penalties," said Oakville coach Greg Vagasky, who handed the goaltending chores to defender Nicolas Popov after Tobak's ejection in the 25th minute. "Fortunately, (Popov) had played four or five games in net this season, so it wasn't totally foreign for him. Even at halftime, we said to the boys we thought we were good enough with 10 men to beat them. We thought it would be either from a set piece or on penalty kicks." Instead, Soutar's goal came on a broken play. Burlington was unable to clear its zone after an Oakville throw-in, and Oakville's Joaquin Da Silva deked past a Bayhawks defender to move deep into Burlington territory. Da Silva played the ball into the box to Oakville captain Marko Vidovich, who backheeled a pass to Soutar for a relatively easy finish from in close. "Given the frantic nature inside the penalty area, (Vidovich) may have heard a call from Matt," Vagasky said. Popov ensured Soutar's goal stood up as the winner. The best Bayhawks chance in the dying minutes came off a long pass into the Oakville box that bounced high in the air. Popov bobbled the ball before securing it with a Burlington player standing next to him. Ironically, even though Popov's replacing of Tobak in net was hardly ideal for Oakville, it may have been an even worse break for the Bayhawks. Tobak was red-carded for tripping Burlington's Noah Bowen near the top of the 18-yard-box, negating what appeared to be a sure goal for the Bayhawks. Had the referee ruled Bowen was fouled in the box -- which he appeared to be -- Burlington would have received a penalty kick. Instead, the Bayhawks were awarded an indirect free kick that deflected harmlessly wide of the Oakville net.
