Kumar wins U.S. Open Neha Kumar, a 15-year-old Q.E. Park student, won the presti gious U.S. Open squash champi onship in the girls U-17 category on Sunday. The U.S. Open, at Princeton, attracted more than 400 partici pants from all around the world, including 64 in the U-17 girls draw. Kumar, despite never having won a U.S. Open and despite coming off injury problems, was ranked number one. She is known for her shrewd and aggressive game with the rare ability to completely change her game in the middle of a match and unnerve her opponents. In the finals, Kumar defeated Sidney Scott in straight sets (9-4, 9-2.9-0). Scott had upset Canadian Alisha Turner, the second seed, in the semifinals. Kumar disposed of the third seed. Katie Brewester, in straight sets (9-0,9-4, 9-5) in her semi. It was the quarterfinals where Kumar was very nearly sent pack ing, dropping the first two games against hard hitting Kristen Lange from Seattle. However, Kumar kept her composure and changed her game to lob and volley, playing some exquisite shots to the front of the court which completely rattled her opponent. She managed to close out the long set quite comfortably (6-9, 4-9, 9-2, 9-3, 9-3). Kumar won her round-of-16 and round-of-32 matches in straight sets over, respectively, Toby Eyre (9-6, 9-5, 9-7) and Madeleine Sullivan (9-0, 9-0, 90).
