Prior choral experience is highly desirable, but Masterworks stresses the most important thing is a good ear and ability to learn music. A Sheridan College alumnus took home an Emmy Award over the weekend for her casting work in the acclaimed dark comedy miniseries Fargo. Stephanie Gorin was part of a three-person team, including Rachel Tenner and Canadian Jackie Lind, that won in the Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special category for their work on FX Network's 10-part television show. "Winning the Emmy was an unbelievable experience," Gorin said. "Having our names up on the screen, walking up to the stage, which was lled with so much talent, was a dream come true." The Creative Arts Emmy Awards were presented at a ceremony at the Nokia Theatre in Hollywood, Calif., on Saturday, Aug. 16. The ceremony is held one week prior to the televised awards and recognizes technical disciplines and behind-the-scenes work. Fargo is inspired by the Coen Brothers' Academy Award-winning lm and stars actors Billy Bob Thorton and Martin Freeman. In July, FX announced it would Masterworks of Oakville is inviting community members to audition to join their performing arts group for the upcoming 2014-15 season. The chorus of 80 voices -- the largest group of its kind in Oakville -- is regularly backed by an orchestra that varies in size, depending on the performance. "I believe we won because the cast of Fargo was not only talented but very unusual," Gorin said. "There were many new faces and a team of professionals who garnered 18 Emmy nominations this year." Gorin graduated in 1981 from the Sheridan Oakville's Media ArtsMusic Theatre program -- now known as Bachelor of Music Theatre-Performance. Heading-up her own Torontobased casting company for the past 25 years, this was Gorin's third Emmy nomination in the Out- standing Casting category. She was recognized in 2008 and 2009 for her work in the CBC television series The Tudors. She is also a three-time Gemini Award winner (now the Canadian Screen Awards) for the CBC series Being Erica, The Border and Guns. Gorin's expertise has also landed her casting credits for her work on the musical productions of Mamma Mia, Miss Saigon, The Wizard of Oz and Les Misérables. "I love the business and I love actors. There is nothing like the joy of seeing someone get their break," she said. It was a heavy haul of hardware for young Oakville performer Isabella Lecomte, who came home from the World Championship of Performing Arts with an array of medals. The 12-year-old received gold medals in Female Vocal Broadway and Female Vocal Opera, a silver medal in Female Vocal Contemporary and bronze medals in Female Vocal Pop and Female Song and Dance. All were in the 11-12 age category. She also received an Industry Award.
