The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e s d a y M a y 15, 2002 - B 3 I I f i l l l: 11 IIIV 2 I I 12 Keep kids safe with MedicAlert As families think about their summer plans, parents should consider steps to ensure their children are safe, especially those with medical conditions. Whether the fun involves camping, field trips, sports or other recreation, children with mild to severe medical conditions, from food or insect allergies to asthma and diabetes, are at risk. Despite having asthma and an allergy to bee stings, twelve-year old Jason is an avid skateboarder who also enjoys riding his stunt bike. He wears his MedicAlert bracelet with pride. "We camp every summer," explains his mother Janis. "We basically live outdoors. There have been times he's been panicked when bees are around, but he knows that if something should happen, paramedics automatically know to look for the MedicAlert bracelet and the hotline number, and theyll know how to treat him immediately." Research (1) indicates as many as one third or approxi mately 1.9 million (2) Canadian children ages 6 to 19 have a medical condition or special need that should be man aged. "As key members of any healthcare team, registered nurses work very closely with families in educating them about promoting health and preventing illness," says Adeline Falk-Rafael, President, Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. "The MedicAlert KidsProtect pro gram will help increase awareness especially with parents of kids with medical conditions who may need the protec tion." "Summer is a time when many of us, especially kids make the most of being active and enjoying life. KidsProtect is a program that helps parents and kids do just that," says Shelagh Tippet-Fagyas, President of Canadian MedicAlert Foundation, Canadas largest member-based charity which serves nearly 100,000 children and youth members. "Given the increase in the amount of outdoor activity and time spent away from home, I know as a parent 1 feel more secure knowing my child is safe. This is especially true for parents of children with any medical condition. Our goal with KidsProtect is to build community awareness to let parents know that there is a way to protect children who are exposed to undue risk. For children in financial need, we offer support through our KidsProtect Assistance pro gram." MedicAlert protects children through a customized med ical bracelet or necklet linked to an emergency hotline. This 24-hour hotline gives health professionals access to a childs confidential medical record and an invaluable head start in treatment. To bolster childrens confidence and to appeal to their active lifestyle, MedicAlert introduces new KidsProtect sport bracelets in animal patterns. In addition, MedicAlert features an online health quiz for children at www.kidsprotect.ca to encourage continued safety awareness.
