Work up a total plan for the entire home, including budget and timetable. As you go along, you can be on the lookout for products that work within your plan. Your neighbourhood decorating centre w ill be glad to help you devise this plan and work at making it become a reality. 1 . Hang pictures at eye level. People frequently make the mistake of hanging photos too high. Hanging them at eye level for the average person's height will enable them to be enjoyed and also make them work better with the furnishings, such as sofas and chairs. 2. Use accessories in odd-numbered groups. It's just a matter of balance. Odd numbers-such as three or five-work better than even-numbered groupings of four or six. 3. Use wallcovering borders. Borders define your lifestyle. They not only are decorative, but frequently they can be a refection of your interest. There are novelty borders that depict gardening scenes, sports activities-such as golfing or fishingor well-loved children's characters. Use borders creatively around doors or win dows, at ceiling or chair-rail heights to give per sonality to your room. 4. Decorate for your lifestyle. If you move fre quently, you may want to choose neutral furnish ings that can go with any decor. Or buy area rugs and extra fabrics that you can take to your new home. If you have young children and pets, choose easy-to-clean carpets and colours that camouflage dirt and scuff marks. 5. Use paint to minimize home's defects and accentuate positive features. For instance, use light colours to make a room look bigger. Or dark colours to make a room look more cozy and inti mate. You can accent a room's feature-such as a pipe or post-by painting it a different colour from the rest of the room or de-emphasize it by painting it the same colour. 6. Use wallcovering suited to your home. Choose lightly-coloured textures and small prints for a smaller room; opt for larger prints and darker backgrounds for a larger room. Use stripes to give a room the illusion of height. Use wallcoverings to tie rooms together. For instance, a living room and adjoining dining room can be done in the same or similar patterns to give a sense of cohesiveness. 7. Look for coordinating products. Many of today's wallcovering sample books feature a whole gamut of coordinating home fashion prod ucts, such as borders, fabrics, comforters, pillow shams, place mats, table rounds and shower cur tains. By selecting a specific collection that fea tures these products, you can put together a whole cohesive decorating package for a relatively low cost. 8. Have a focal point. Your focal point can be virtually anything-a fireplace, a painting, an enter tainment centre. By having a focal point, you can decorate to accentuate the focal point and give your room a sense of cohesion. 9. Collect photos of rooms you love. If you're not sure how to define your decorating style, start collecting photos from decorating magazines. Look at the photos to determine what is the same about theni-same colours, same styles, same types of furnishings. A light-coloured ceil ing attracts attention. This is because our eyes are naturally attracted to objects that stand out, and white stands out the most because it has the highest reflective value of any colour. However, white is not always the most desirable colour for a ceiling. A darker-coloured ceiling helps to direct the eye back down to head level, allowing it to focus on the lighter or contrasting objects in a room, such as the walls, furnishings and accessories. What would you prefer people to focus on-- the ceiling or the objects in the space, which reflect your personality? Myth 2: An all-white room seems larger. A room that is all white-- or all black or completed entirely in any one colour-- w ill seem larger than one with numerous colours in it. W hy? It is con trast which makes a room feel smaller because your eye darts all over, focus ing on various objects within the space. Monochromatic schemes are often ele gant. but sometimes can seem lacking in personality compared to multicoloured decors. Myth 3: Trim must always be paint ed white. It is true that white usually fits all roomscapes. However, because trim colour can be carried through an entire home fairly easily, it can be either lighter or darker than the base wall colour. Dark trim in a room's accent shade can add a new dimension to a room. Myth 4: Only certain colours go together. A ll colours can be combined. but the combinations depend on person al taste and the space in which they are placed. A unifying factor such as a colourful piece of fabric often helps colours blend together better. Myth 5: A long, narrow hallway is made shorter by ftointing the ends dark. In fact the opposite is true. W hy? It is impossible to see both ends at the same time and the one dark wall that you do see tends to recede, making the hall feel even longer. How do you make a long hall feel wider? Paint the two long walls the same colour, but in different shades. For example paint one wall a light colour and the opposite wall in a darker shade of the same colour. This will help push the walls out, making the space feel wider. Myth 6: Colour continuity means the same colour throughout. Colour conti nuity does not mean painting every room in your house the same colour, but rather that there is some relationship between the colour scheme of one room and the next. One or two unifying colours in adjoining rooms makes them feel similar even though they look dif ferent. Myth 7: Pink is for girls; blue is for boys. Fortunately, this stereotype is dis appearing. Kids' rooms today show cre ative uses of many colours and focus on themes such as the circus or the zoo. Gender-oriented colours are definitely passe. Myth 8: Paint colours must match furniture exactly. Paint colours selected from patterns and colours in furniture do not have to match perfectly as long as they are in the same colour fami ly and follow the same tone.
