Trainers with the Oakville-based Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides -- the largest training school of its kind in Canada -- were on hand Tuesday at Town Hall to mark the occasion with a few playful puppies who are soon-to-be assistance dogs. The organization's executive director, Sandy Turney, said the week was about raising awareness for a global effort. "It's great for us to help promote all the different ways dogs can help people with a really wide range of disabilities," Turney said, as she held the leash of an eight-week old black lab named Dalia. The Pembroke Drive three-bedroom, single-family dwelling will of cially pass to Christine de Koning, a single mother with three teenagers, at a key ceremony tomorrow (Saturday). Sammy, the family's eldest daughter, said she is overwhelmed by the amount of support her family has received en route to its goal of owning a home for the rst time. The teenager also credited her mom for much. "Throughout this journey, my mom has been my rock," said Sammy. "Without my mom, I'd be lost. My mom is the compass that guides me, my inspiration to reach great heights, my comfort when I occasionally falter and my best friend. Without the support of my mom, I would not have the strength I have now... together we stand. I love you, Mommy." For Sammy's mother, the experience has been a memorable one. "It was amazing that my family and I were on our own property building our own home," she says, "We are all honoured to have had so many supporters working to help us.
