Judging by the incinerated furniture, smoke damage and blistered paint, luck was definitely on their side. Nigel and Sandy, plus chil dren Matthew, 18, Derek, 14, Benji. 12, Adam, 20, and two of Derek's friends. Michael Lorenz and Washington Astwood, were asleep when the fire started. Around 6 a.m. the peace was shattered when Adam -- in whose basement room the blaze originated -- dashed upstairs and woke Matthew, who went for water to help douse the fire. Adam grabbed a fire extin guisher instead and went back downstairs -- a fact which still chills his father -- and attacked the flames which appeared to have started in his stereo equip ment. Thinking the emergency was over, Adam opened the back door and windows to vent smoke. That move only fed oxy gen to the fire which was explo sively resurrected. "Adam's room is just char coal now," says Nigel. "It's incredible. In 15 minutes the house went from what it was to what it is now." Just to add a few gray hairs to his parents' heads, Adam returned downstairs to success fully rescue the family dog. Now wide awake and intent on getting everyone out. Nigel saw smoke billowing out the back door and from under the soffits. The heat which funnelled up through the basement and back stairs was extraordinary, melting the carpet, blistering paint and flooding the upstairs with smoke. The only casualties were two house plants. "It's a blessing everyone's safe," said Sandy. The Oakville Fire Depart ment arrived on the scene and quickly beat the fire back, saving the upper floor. Ambulance per sonnel were also on hand with encouraging words and warm blankets. "They were amazing," said Sandy.
