Oakville actor Joshua Close admits that working with big names like Harrison Ford and Neeson was overwhelming but it was definitely something he enjoyed doing. "They are extremely talented actors. I was so happy to be able to work with them," says Close. Close appears in this summer's thriller K I9 The Widow Maker with Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. The movie, which is scheduled for a July 19 release, is about the nuclear Russian submarine that went down off the coast of Ireland dur ing the Cold War. `T h e movie is based on a true story," Close explains. "It focuses on the sacrifices Joshua Close the submariners had to make to get their jobs done." Close plays Victor Bokov, nicknamed the Shaman, a junior officer aboard the K 19. It is his job to decode the messages and give them to the captains - Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson. Not only was Close in the movie with Ford and Neeson. but he was actually lucky enough to have scenes with them. Working with such big Hollywood stars would make anyone feel nervous. Close was no exception. "For the first two weeks I was a nervous wreck. I eventually relaxed and got comfortable with it." To prepare for this role. Close did extensive train ing with the Canadian Navy. They fought fires, floods and learned about radiation. "The training was amaz ing. We would go and try to put these huge fires out. We really go into it, we wore all the gear and every thing." The whole experience was an educational one for Close. "I learned more in those five months then I have during my whole acting career." Close started his acting when he was in Grade 12 at Iroquois Ridge High School. He was originally into playing sports, but he realized it wouldn't go further so he tired his hand at acting. "I had a fear of (acting) but I wanted to see what I could do" He joined a local theatre called West End Studio Theatre and started taking some classes. He made his debut in the independent film In The Lair. He can also been seen the MTV series Undressed. "I play a college guy who catches his girlfriend messing around with someone else. " Close is currently working on his own script. He is "sending it out there and hoping it will catch on." Photos by Peter C.
