However, they hope this weekend, will not mark their final performance. Ranked number two in the entire province, the Rangers are hosting this year's OMHA championships at River Oaks rec centre, with preliminary round games all day Friday and Saturday followed on Sunday by the bronze and gold medal matches (see schedule). The Rangers get to host the presti gious OMHA championship by virtue of winning it the past two years. But naturally, they earned their ticket the hard way with three-game playoff sweeps over Welland and St. Catharines. Add those six playoff wins on to their perfect regular season record of 31-0 and that's 37-0 in regular season and playoff action, so far. this season. A telling story of this team was their last playoff game against St. Catharines. The Rangers were down 3-0 and they had every excuse to write one bad night off. Heck, they still had breathing room in the series, having won the first two games. And besides, they didn't really need to win the series, with their automatic berth into the OMHA finals. But they came back and won 5-4. "I'm not going to say they don't panic," said Rangers head coach Scott McKenzie. "Everybody panics." They're competitive in practice, you know they have challenges with goaltenders. they have challenges with the defencemen when they're doing one-on-ones. They have chal lenges on who's going to score a nicer goal when they go down on the drills that we're doing. They're just a com petitive bunch o f guys. "And they all get along together. They're all friends." Remarkably, the completely home grown team, which incorporated five players from last year's AA rep team, actually managed to improve on last year's almost perfect league record of 30 wins and 1 tie. "1 think when you can make five changes from AA and still have an undefeated season. I think that speaks highly about the talent in this age group in Oakville." said coach McKenzie. Even more telling about this phe nomenal '86 birth year for Oakville hockey players, is that the bantam AA team, this season, has also made their own OMHA championship series (see related story, page D3).
