E R I E - L Y S U C C E S S F U L Local paddlers to compete at world sprint championships Five Burloak Canoe Club members and another local paddler have been named to the CanoeKayak Canada (CKC) team that will compete in this year's ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Russia. Adam van Koeverden, Brady Reardon and Rob Clarke will compete in men's kayak, while Mark Oldershaw and Aaron Rublee will race in men's canoe. Oakville resident KC Fraser, a member of Balmy Beach Canoe Club, was selected for women's kayak competition. The world championships will be held Aug. 6-10 in Moscow. "We're now into year two of the Olympic quadrennial and every country is ramping up their level of preparedness, including Canada," said Scott Logan, CKC's high performance director. "Moscow will be a good indicator of our competitive status and how our high-performance plan is rolling out. Our entire team is committed to achieving our 2016 Olympic goals and this is our rst real evaluation opportunity." Junior team selections Burloak's Jillian Perrone and Sam Pennyfather were recently selected to CKC junior teams that are competing at international meets this summer. Perrone will race in women's canoe at the Pan American Championships Sept. 4-7 in Mexico City. She and Pennyfather (men's kayak) took part in the Canada Day Regatta event June 28-29 in Ottawa and will compete again at the Lake Placid International Regatta this weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y. Club is national training centre Earlier this year, Burloak was ofcially designated as one of CKC's four national team training centres. Atlantic (Dartmouth, N.S.), Montreal and Quebec City were the other centres named by CKC in an effort to strengthen the association's high-performance system. "This is a critical step to re ning our system to be the best in the world," said Logan. "With our fastest athletes training together and being supported by national team coaches and support staff, we are strengthening the pathway from learning to paddle at a canoe club to achieving international success." 19 | Friday, July 4, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Oakville Soccer Club's girls' under-14 C team did not allow a single goal at the recent Erie Premier Cup in Erie, Pa., going undefeated in ve games to win the championship.
