www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 27, 2014 | 20 Blue Jays' Dickey visits Oakville school Mother Teresa Catholic elementary school students were rewarded this week for their recent fundraising work with a visit from Toronto Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Dickey. Dickey's stop at the school Tuesday was a surprise to all students except for six -- Jordan Diana, Ada DiCenso, Isabella Benevides, Troy Whitehorn, Owen Darling and Evan Figueroa -- who were each asked in advance to prepare a question for the knuckleballer. Dickey conducted a question-and-answer period on the benefits of being healthy. The Blue Jays also gave away hats and skipping ropes to all the students. Mother Teresa students raised $11,400 last year for the Terry Fox Run, a fundraiser for the fight against cancer. The school's amount of money raised ranked 25th among all grade schools in Ontario. Dr. Michelle Ghert, an orthopaedic surgeon and researcher at McMaster University who has special expertise in the treatment of tumors, was the guest speaker at the school's campaign kickoff assembly. Mother Teresa students of all ages participated in last year's run. Kindergarten students also had a dance party, primary grade students did Zumba with a certified instructor, and students in Grades 4-8 were eligible to play in a student-teacher ball hockey game. Burlington's Sports Obsession provided a discount on jerseys for the ball hockey contest, and Wendy's, Branthaven Homes and the parents of teacher Tim Durkin contributed money towards the cost of the jerseys. According to Durkin, Mother Teresa has raised approximately $96,000 for the Terry Fox Run since 2005. Toronto Blue Jays pitcher R.A.
