Taking a 19-0 record in the final, a mark which included two tournament championships (in two outings) and a perfect league record, the Longhorns found themselves tied 1-1 with the Loyola Hawks on a windy North Park field. "It was really nerve-wracking," said Longhorns midfielder Aubin Queh, who scored Corpus Christi's first goal five minutes into the game. "They were our biggest competition this year." The hero turned out to be another Longhorns midfielder, Mariana Arenas, who fired a bullet to the top right corner on a free kick just outside the 18-yard line with about 15 minutes remaining in the 70-minute match. Loyola Hawks, who had already upset another undefeated team -- Volpe Division champion Holy Trinity -- in the semifinals, were attempting to cut down the other undefeated Halton squad, the Richardson Division champion Longhorns. "They're a tough team," said Debbie Woolvett, Hawks' co-coach along with Tiffany Komow, of the Longhorns. "It was a lot closer than our first game, a 5-3 (regular-season) loss." The difference in the match, according to Woolvett, was her side committing too many fouls. "We wanted to clean up our game but the second goal was off a foul," she said. "We tried to collapse on their midfield because we know they have some big shooters in the middle." The Longhorns enjoyed a 1-0 lead for most of the first half after Queh's goal, but it was a new game when Hawks' midfielder Sophia Borea, an Ontario team member, connected with her left foot after making some deft moves in front of the Longhorns' net in the last couple of minutes of the half. "And she's a rightie," added Woolvett. Longhorns co-coach Tina Turnonae wasn't surprised to be facing the Hawks in the final.
