The Holy Trinity Secondary School Grade 12 student took home the gold medal for Architectural Technology and Design in the Ontario Technological Skills Competition, which took place at RIM Park in Waterloo last month. The competition, which is in its 25th year, brought out more than 1,900 of Ontario's top students to compete in various computer and technological competitions and showcase the skills they've been learning in school. Goulart competed against 40 other secondary school students from across the province and was tasked with designing a townhouse based on specific requirements. Using a computer and software created for architects, he had about eight hours to complete the assignment. The 17-year-old qualified for the competition in April by taking home gold in Architectural Technology and Design at the Halton Skills Competition at Burlington's M.M. Robinson High School. He said he's honoured to receive the recognition for something he loves to do. Goulart credits Technological Studies department head and teacher Bruce Law for encouraging him to take part in the competitions. He is moving on to the Skills Canada National Competition this week where more than 500 students from across the country will be tested in more than 40 trade and technology areas. It is taking place at the International Centre in Toronto until Saturday (June 7). He said he'll likely be tasked with building a custom home, but he's confident in his abilities to do the task well. He added the Halton competition had him designing the main floor of a bungalow home while the Ontario competition saw him building a townhouse. Each competition, he said, was progressively more challenging. Goulart plans to apply to architecture programs at university.
