Peter Keogh is teaming up with Len Pace and Troy Hare to host the second annual Something to Wine About fundraiser Sunday (June 22) at The Olive Press, benefitting the Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House in Oakville and Tour for Kids, a charity that supports special camp organizations that improve the quality of life for children and adolescents living with cancer. Wellspring programs are open to individuals and caregivers coping with any type of cancer, at any stage. Programs include individual and group support, coping skills, expressive therapies, workshops and cancer rehab programs. "It's our way of paying it forward," said Keogh, "... (the organizations) give (people) an opportunity to live beyond cancer and make a difference in people's lives." Keogh is a six-year, colorectal cancer survivor; Pace's son died at age six from bone cancer -- both are participating in the 11th annual Tour for Kids charity cycling event, Aug. 14-17. Riders can choose between a four-, two- or one-day tour, riding anywhere between 100-250 kilometres daily. The cycling adventure through parts of southern Ontario raises money for three camps: Oochigeas, Quality and Trillium. Hare, whose wife had breast cancer, is riding in the 2014 Wellspring Peloton Challenge, Sept 27-Oct. 3, from Toronto to New Orleans. The seven-day, more than 2,500-km supported relay sees teams ride for six hours and complete an average of 120 km daily until they reach their destination. Hare and Keogh met last year when both participated in the Wellspring Peloton Challenge from Oakville to Austin, TX -- the pair, along with Pace, decided to team up this year and host a collective fundraiser for their causes. "It's about people in the community caring about people in the community," said Keogh. "These are both 100 per cent non-profit organizations, all supported by people in the community, that's why I'm behind it... it's all for a great cause." The idea for the inaugural Something to Wine About fundraiser came about last year when Keogh was looking for a creative way to raise funds for and awareness of Wellspring. The inaugural event saw 135 people attend, raising $7,000 for the cause. Wanting the fundraiser to become an annual occurrence, Keogh says this year he hopes 200 people attend and is expecting to raise approximately $12,000. The money raised from will be split 50/50 between Tour for Kids and Wellspring. Something to Wine About will include food and wine sampling, entertainment and a silent auction. Steven Daicos of The Olive Press, 2322 Dundas St. W., has agreed to provide anyone who donates a bottle of wine -- of a minimum $15 value -- for the raffles with a $15 gift card from his restaurant.
