Hudak says PCs led fight against power plant location by Tina Depko-Denver Metroland West Media Group 3 | Friday, May 30, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) Leader Tim Hudak says helping residents find quality jobs in their own communities, ensuring hospitals are state-of-the art facilities and investing in expanded GO services are among his top priorities for Halton. Hudak visited the Oakville Beaver/Burlington Post office Wednesday in a day of meetings with editorial boards at newspapers from Niagara through Halton. He noted he was grateful his schedule allowed him to spend a night at his Wellandport home with his family, which includes wife Deb, and daughters Miller, 6, and Maitland, two months. The long-time politician says his primary focus as leader is job creation and increasing disposable income among Ontario workers. He hopes to achieve this through more jobs, better take-home pay and less red tape for businesses. In a round of questions pertaining strictly to Halton, Hudak was quick with his answers. When it comes to Burlington, where nearly 70 per cent of adults over the age of 25 have completed post-secondary education, as well as the rest of Ontario, he says his goal is quality, long-term jobs. "I want to have career jobs -- I'm not interested in creating part-time, minimum-wage jobs that you are stuck with," he said. "I want jobs that you can build a career around, Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) Leader Tim Hudak sat down for a one-on-one interview with Metroland West Media Group reporter Tina Depko-Denver Wednesday. | photo by Nikki Wesley Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) you can count on to pay the mortgage and you can set money aside for the kids' tuition... The gas plant cancellations in Oakville and Mississauga have continued to dominate newspaper headlines. Hudak said the PC party, specifically Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh, led the fight against the selection of Oakville for a gas-fired power plant. He said the Mike Harris government also rallied against it. "When we were in government, the bureaucrats brought forward the idea of opening up a gas plant in Oakville as well as Mississauga, and we started (surveying) communities," he said. "The bureaucrats said `no', so Energy Minister Jim Wilson said `OK, we're not doing it', so that actually stopped it by saying `no'." Hudak said Liberal candidate Kevin Flynn, who has been Oakville's MPP , should have spoken up sooner about his opposition to the plant in his riding. "It's unfortunate Mr. Flynn kept his decision quiet until the very end -- that cost us almost a billion dollars," Hudak said. There have been questions raised by opposing parties about whether a PC government would continue to support financial commitments for the new Oakville hospital, Burlington's Joseph Brant Hospital redevelopment and expansion, as well as the Milton hospital expansion. Hudak said Halton residents have his word these projects will continue. "Halton has grown so fast -- we have to make sure that our hospitals from Oakville to Joseph Brant to Milton are there with state-of-the art, modern facilities," he said. "That's a commitment I have." see PCs on p.4 inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com Same or Next Day Delivery to 6 18 Artscene Classified 16 21 oakville *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com Great big Super Sac black soil Delivery iNcluDeD LIMITED SPACE available for September 2014 Green bulk Delivery available!
