Bronte Bluffs will see some restoration and extra protection thanks to a $25,000 grant. The Town of Oakville and its project partners Conservation Halton, Evergreen and the Bronte Business Improvement Area (BIA) received the funding boost from the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund, which provides grants to community groups for grassroots activities that include cleaning up a beach or shoreline or restoring a wetland. "This council is committed to protecting green space and enhancing Oakville's natural environment," said Mayor Rob Burton in a release. "The Bronte Bluffs (is) another example of the way we are making some of Oakville's Bronte Bluffs to benefit with cash boost from Great Lakes fund beautiful outdoor spaces even more family and environmentally friendly." The project, which will begin this spring at the waterfront greenspace, aims to improve local water quality, reduce stormwater runoff into the lake and improve the habitat for birds and local species while enhancing the experience of visitors in the area. The funds will be used to remove a direct stormwater outfall pipe into the lake and replace it with a bioswale and naturalized planting -- as well as to remove invasive species and planting native plants. Additional educational signage, improved trails and the construction of a small viewing platform at the top of the parking lot stairs to overlook Bronte Beach will also be undertaken. The work is expected to be complete by this fall. The Bronte Bluffs, along the Lake Ontario shoreline, forms a part of a significant stopover/staging area for migratory birds. It is located on the waterfront trail and features a park and several heritage buildings such as Sovereign House and a museum with exhibits on local history -- much related to the Great Lakes.
