At top left, Brooklyn Kearns, 10, takes a close look at marigolds before planting them as well as tomato plants (above) -- with some help from her dad, Paul Kinsella (above). They were among many who planted flowers and vegetables, including broccoli, onions, beets and carrots, in the community garden at South Service Road and Lyons Lane Saturday afternoon. Shoppers were also out in number at the Civitan Farmers' Market in the parking lot of Dorval Crossing, 240 North Service Rd. (east of Dorval Drive). The longest-running market opened two weekends ago and operates 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday until Nov. 29. The Civitan Club of Oakville has operated it for 33 years in support of local community charities. At right, Zachary Semeniuk, 2, carries a bag of vegetables for his mom. Noting many residents commute to work outside the town, she said she'd like to see residents with more choices on where they live. "There is no problem that is unsolvable and there's no solution that requires only one option," Marville said. "We need to come up with a lot of examples Oakville riding NDP candidate Che Marville of how to be innovative and we need to throw them on the table and be really willing and courageous about thinking about new models we can be bringing to the table." "I'm unafraid to speak and ask questions," she said. " I see leadership as something that lifts up human beings. I think we need politicians to be advocates for citizens." "Ideology, corporate branding and superficial leadership are not what's going to get us out of the problems we're facing," she continued. "Ontario has always taken the lead in Canada. That has disappeared. We have become a havenot province." Scott said the Conservative platform makes a great deal of sense in that it focuses on fixing the economy first so funds will be available for important things like education and health care. Married to his wife Donna for 35 years and father of three, Scott is an active leader in the Oakville community. He is a member of the investments committee of the Oakville Community Foundation and served as part of the United Way of Oakville leadership team. He currently serves on the Board of Governors of Wilfrid Laurier University, where he received his undergraduate degree in Honours Economics. He is also a past director of Oakville Hydro. When asked about the failed power plant designated for a residential area of Oakville by the McGuinty government, Scott was clear, "That gas plant was an ill-conceived plan from the beginning and should never have been taken to the point it did. It will now cost taxpayers in excess of $731 million to fix the mistake. We need a government with an energy policy that protects its citizens and the environment in a financially responsible manner while creating jobs in our province." In his spare time Scott enjoys sailing, skiing and golfing.
