The children had a lesson from Liftow Instructional Services Consultant Craig Russell, who explained what forklifts are used for, how they are handled safely and how they work. The eager students learned a forklift weighs about 9,000 lbs. -- almost twice as much as your average car. Filip buckled up in the forklift and had the unique opportunity of pulling a lever, which in turn moved the forks about 21 feet into the air -- all to the excited screams of his classmates, who stood around cheering like it was a rock concert. Galloway, who spent a number of days helping Filip do his research on what company to contact, said she never imagined the outcome would turn out this positively. Noting that encouraging Filip to write a letter about what he's passionate about was a way for her to engage him in reading and writing, she said she's pleased to see how his learning has progressed through his love for heavy machinery. It's also nice to see him reap the rewards for his hard work, she said. Galloway described how Filip, over the last month, has hardly been able to contain his excitement, counting down the days until the forklift finally arrived. To further his learning, he'll be writing about his experience. His parents, Chris and Justyna Rembisz, described how their son's passion for forklifts and heavy machinery took on a life of its own over the past few years. Mesmerized by how forklifts move and the "cool noises" they make, the proud parents said Filip can talk about forklifts and their specs for hours on end. His parents also joked that now their son can settle down. "I think we'll be able to sleep at night now that this is done," said Chris, admitting that seeing a forklift up close will either calm Filip down or add fuel to the fire. He said he's thankful the school and the company have provided Filip with this enriching experience that will surely make a huge impact on his life. "I know when he started off in JK and SK, he had a hard time writing. He surprised us with what he can do and how he has progressed," Chris said.
