Oakville QEW 905-847-5555 Bronte resident Sean Caffrey has his sights set on becoming the next Town and Regional Councillor for Ward 3. Caffrey, who has called Oakville home for more than 15 years, registered officially on April 14 to become a candidate in the upcoming fall municipal election on Oct. 27. The 50-year-old Caffrey said he decided to enter the world of politics because he believes the town needs a fresh outlook and forward thinking on how to deal with the upcoming issues it will face. Of significant importance to Caffrey, a married father of two teenage sons, is the revitalization of the town's downtown area and keeping the "charm and significance" of it. "Downtown Oakville is at a critical point right now. It's at tipping point. It can go either way," he said, noting how a number of shops remain boarded up and closed. "A lot of small towns in Ontario and the (United) States are facing the same thing, deterioration of the downtown just because it wasn't as viable as it once was with the malls and big box (stores), etc., etc." As a councillor, he said, he would be prepared to inject new ideas into the mix. Providing an example, he said, he would put forward criteria and propose regulations for when stores are closed. Sean Caffrey "Some of the storefronts are boarded up, not just wallpaper over the windows and it looks like a town in distress when you walk by," said Caffrey, noting how he would work with the Business Improvement Area (BIA) and Sheridan College students in an effort to beautify the closed shops until they are occupied by tenants again. More details of his ideas will be in his candidate platform, which he said will be released later in May. Caffrey added another significant problem he's prepared to tackle is land usage. "The hospital is coming down. If you're not careful, the high density will become a big problem for that area and fast forward 15 years, the charm of that area will be gone," he said, adding there should be more of a proactive approach to make long-lasting change. Caffrey currently runs his own asset management company and has been doing so for the last 26 years. He is also on the board of directors for the Conservative riding association in Oakville. While he lives in Bronte, he said Ward 3 is where he believes he can make the biggest impact. He said he's determined to put forward long-term solutions that will protect the historical aspect of the area and make the downtown area stronger. Ward 3 is bounded on the north by the QEW , south by Lake Ontario, west by Sixteen Mile Creek, and east by Winston Churchill Boulevard. Caffrey said he has skill in looking to the future and although he's never had a political role, he's engaged in community efforts. He was on the Ontario Basketball Association's board of directors and was a member of the Greater Toronto Apartment Association, helping it come up with protocol on how to handle tenant problems and maintenance. He also ran a water protection and water quality booth at the Oakville Waterfront Festival for a number of years and was involved in running educational projects related to the Clean Water Act.
