Oakville ball associations holding Opening Day Saturday Oakville's two minor baseball associations will officially open their 2014 campaigns Saturday, May 10. Baseball Oakville (Oakville Minor Baseball Association) will hold an Opening Day Celebration at Glenashton Park (Eighth Line and Glenashton Drive), with Oakville Little League slated to hold similar festivities at Cornwall Park (425 Cornwall Rd.). Baseball Oakville's plans include a parade of all its players -- house league, select and rep -- at 10:30 a.m., accompanied by the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets' 20-piece marching band and colour guard. An on-field celebration will follow at 11:30 a.m., featuring a welcome to players and families, introductions, presentation of colours, the national anthem and a ceremonial first pitch by Oakville Ward 3 councillor Dave Gittings. All Baseball Oakville players are entitled to a free sandwich and drink from noon to 6 p.m. The first games of the Baseball Oakville season will be played by house league (mosquito and peewee) teams at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Oakville A's rep exhibition contests will be played at 7 p.m., with the 2013 provincial AAA champion senior rookie ball A's taking on the Mississauga North Tigers and the 2013 provincial A champion peewee A's facing the Mississauga South Twins. Oakville Little League's opening day will have a Mother's Day theme, with the diamonds decorated pink and all proceeds from the weekend going towards the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Games will be played throughout the day on the two diamonds at Cornwall Park. Hotdogs, popcorn, cold drinks, pink cupcakes and barbecued burgers will be available at the concession stand. "It (will be) great to see the kids back on the diamonds after a long, cold winter, having fun and playing ball," said OLL president John Sweeney. This season will mark the fourth year of OLL 's Challenger division for autistic children. Sweeney said the division will likely feature more than 100 participants in 2014, more than double its original 45-player base from three years ago. 19 | Wednesday, May 7, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton Minor Ball Hockey League Standings as of May 4, 2014 A) Learn To Play 3-6 A1-LTP Julian Dean Photography Bruins (Gold) A2-LTP Toronto Marlies (Blue) A3-LTP Hamilton Bulldogs (Red) A4-LTP K.N. The Red Devils have also had strong contributions from Emma Henry and Breanna Jager, who played senior as Grade 9s last year. "We just keep working. We've improved so much, so quickly," Newton said. "We're a lot more aware of what we need to do. Gold is the goal." The key now is to bring that talent together and play -- as it says on the front of their new jerseys -- As One. continued from p.18 Oakville was scheduled to visit the Markham Ironheads yesterday (Tuesday), a game that began after the Beaver's press deadlines.
