Hoskins launches Starter Program for youths by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Friday, April 18, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Dr. Eric Hoskins, Ontario's Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment visited Oakville recently to announce the Province will spend $9 million over two years to help young entrepreneurs succeed in Ontario. Oakville MPP and Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn, Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr and Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring joined Hoskins at the Halton Region Small Business Centre at the Bronte Road regional centre for the launch of the Starter Company program. The initiative is intended to provide Ontario youths with training, business skills development, mentoring from local business leaders and capital to start, grow or buy a small business. "We want to ensure all young people in this province are given the support they need to succeed, regardless of where they live or their circumstances," said Hoskins. "Young people are our future, but our present as well. They contribute to our communities and our society in so many ways and are critical to our well-being as a province and as a society, let alone our economy. We need to harness their ideas, harness their vision and unleash their enthusiasm. It is their ideas, their creativity and their Dr. Eric Hoskins drive that will truly help build today's economy." Hoskins said the Province's goal with the program is to assist up to 800 young entrepreneurs over two years. Hoskins said the estimate is conservative and he believes the program will help considerably more people. Youths interested in participating can apply at one of Ontario's 57 Small Business Enterprise Centres, including Halton's. Besides advice from mentors, participants could receive up to $5,000 to help launch a business. "Giving young people the skills they need in today's global economy is essential to Ontario's future success," said Flynn. "By offering entrepreneurial training and support in Halton Region, we are giving our young people the leg up they need to get their business off the ground, be self-sufficient and create the jobs of tomorrow." The program was welcomed by Blake Elliot, 23, of the mobile game developer Lone Wolf Pack Interactive, at the announcement event. "I would like to hear stuff like this all the time," he said. The Starter Company Program is part of the Province's two-year $295million Youth Jobs Strategy, which is intended to help 30,000 Ontario young people connect with the tools, experience and support needed to find jobs or start their own business. inside today's Editorial Sports Beaver www.insideHALTON.com Home Hardware Dr. Green Services New Homes Cost to Coast Furnishing Stone-Link Corp.
