www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, March 7, 2014 | 8 Oakville woman dives in to save life in Florida by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff An Oakville woman, vacationing in Port Charlotte, Florida, used her lifeguard training and an AriZona Iced Tea to come the aid of an elderly man in distress late last month. On the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 21, Kaelan Chambers, 21, was poolside at her grandparents' retirement complex when she noticed an older swimmer was having difficulty. "It was just me and this elderly man. He had been swimming and I noticed it was taking him a while to get out," she said. "When he came over and sat down beside me, his breathing was very laboured. I asked him if he was OK. It took him three tries before I understood that he was asking me if I had a candy." Chambers, who served as a lifeguard for many years, said at this point her training took over and she asked the man if he had diabetes. He did. With no one around and no working phone within reach, the Abbey Park High School graduate made the difficult decision to leave European Engineering Combined With Traditional Workmanship "Building on the Brightest Ideas Around Glass" 905.849.0266 the man by the pool as she rushed to get what he needed. "I ran back to my grandparents' condo and grabbed an AriZona Iced Tea that my grandma and I had bought that morning," said Chambers. "By the time I got back, he was barely conscious. I had to really shake him to get him to open his eyes and I helped him drink the AriZona." After a few sips, Chambers said the man started to become more aware and told her his doctor had recently changed his insulin, which may have led to the problem. Chambers said she walked the man back to his condo, observed as he carried out an insulin test, and ensured he was fine before she left. The Western University student described the experience as a scary one. "I really wasn't expecting to have to do anything like that," she said. "I've been a lifeguard since I was 16 and when you are on shift you are always really ready for that to happen, but when you are on vacation at the pool, you are really not prepared. I thought it was funny how the instinct kicks in and you go through all the same steps you would if you were working." Chambers' father, Gary, said his daughter's actions were not surprising since, while working as a lifeguard at Western University, she has helped a number of people in distress. "We just have incredible pride because of what she did, how quickly she reacted and Oakville's Kaelan Chambers, 21, put her lifeguard training to work to save a life while on vacation in Florida. | photo courtesy Gary Chambers how level-headed she remained during the situation," he said. "We continually feel blessed to have her as a daughter." Chambers shied away from praise, saying modestly, she was simply in the right place at the right time.
