Winless after two games at the annual Burlington high school boys' hockey tournament, the Eagles won their next four contests by a combined score of 23-10 to win the Gold Pool (elite division) championship for the first time in school history. Abbey Park clinched the title with a 5-3 win over Mississauga's Our Lady of Mount Carmel Saturday afternoon at Burlington's Appleby Ice Centre. Evan Herniak (two), Spencer Douglas, Alexandre Bisson and Alex Cox scored in the gold-medal game, while goaltender Matthew Barth recorded the victory and was named MVP . "This is a very determined bunch," said longtime Eagles coach Larry Rinaldo. "They just seem to get hungrier as they go." Abbey Park tied both its games on Thursday, the opening day of the tournament, playing to 3-3 draws with Sudbury St. Charles and Ancaster. The Eagles then routed Lorne Park 7-3 to advance to the playoff round, where they doubled up the Nelson Lords 4-2 and hogtied the Corpus Christi Longhorns 7-2. "We just wanted to be friendly on the first day," Rinaldo quipped. "We weren't satisfied with the ties, so that just made us a little hungrier."
