We know that when we flush the toilet, the sewage is going to sanitation facilities and not directly into our lakes, rivers and streams. That is not the case in developing countries in Africa nor is it available in some countries in South America or in countries like Haiti and the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. The three Rotary Clubs in Oakville are currently involved as they have in the past in partnering with Rotary International and Rotary Clubs in Kampala and Lira, as the co-primary host sponsors for a project to provide the leadership for a Water and Sanitation Project. The Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar is providing the leadership. Rotary's water projects will provide safe water systems to both communities through a variety of initiatives, including education about hygiene. The plan includes having the villages trained in maintenance and repair of all mechanical components. This will help the community and generate income through micro-financing and loans for sustainability. The sustainable results for this project can be captured in an Asian proverb that says, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I will learn.
