Skate Oakville members win three medals at sectionals A club-record three Skate Oakville members won medals at last week's Skate Canada Central Ontario Sectional Championship and Pre-Juvenile/Juvenile Invitational in Thornhill. Julianne Li (juvenile under-11 women), Natasha Beaudoin (pre-juvenile U14 women) and Eugene Zhang (pre-juvenile U11 men) all claimed bronze medals, and Lin (pictured, right) also qualified for the 2014 Ontario Winter Games. "We've been building for this, certainly, as we revamped our program and brought in Michelle (Leigh, the club's competitive director) a few years ago," Skate Oakville technical director Joni McPhail said of the club's first sectional medals in more than a decade. "You always hope for a medal to show your program is developing along the path. I would say three was a pleasant surprise." Also posting Top-5 finishes at the events were the dance teams of Shelby Dondej and Keith Dinda (fourth, pre-juvenile), Celine Dubroy-McArdle and Timuray Gokdemir (fifth, juvenile), and Angel Green and Matthew Snowden (fifth, pre-novice). Several of the sectional skaters will be showcased Sunday in the club's Gala of Synchronized Skating at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Beaudoin, Zhang, Li, Ashlynne Stairs, Bradley Keeping-Myra and Emma Dinda will join all EDGE synchronized skating teams at the gala, as will Canadian senior ladies bronze medallist Alaine Chartrand and 2013 Canadian novice pair champions Rachael Dobson and Alexander Sheldrick. The gala will take place from 2:30-4:30 p.m. In addition to the on-ice action, there will also be a silent auction and bake sale. Oakville players settle for silver at U18 nationals With Oakville residents forming one-fourth of the team, Ontario Blue earned silver at the recent Canadian women's under-18 hockey championship in Calgary. Ontario Blue went 2-0-0-1 in round-robin play and defeated Alberta 3-1 in the semifinal before falling 8-1 to Ontario Red in the gold-medal game. Oakville Trafalgar High School student Kirsten Miller was second in Ontario Blue scoring with two goals and two assists in five games. Lindsay Agnew added a pair of goals in a tournament-opening 4-3 win over Atlantic. Goaltender Sarah McDonnell saw action in two games, posting a 1-1 record with a 4.00 goals-against average and an .840 save percentage. She did not see playing time in the loss to Ontario Red. Forwards Kristin O'Neill and Madison Field were the other two local residents who played for Ontario Blue, which was looking to repeat as national champs. 19 | Wednesday, November 20, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com | photo courtesy Danielle Earl Photography The Oakville bantam A Rangers recently won the championship at a Can/Am hockey tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y.
