hen Santa comes to town Saturday, Nov. 16, you can be sure people of all ages will line the streets of Downtown Oakville and Kerr Village. This year's theme is Celebrating 65 Years, and the parade's special story of giving back to the community is one of the reasons to celebrate. Sometimes we get so caught up with the excitement of Christmas we forget there are many who live in our community who go without. Oakville's Santa Claus Parade has a long history of giving with its toy and food drives and the sale of red noses for charity to make our community a better place for those less fortunate. On parade day, the Kin Club of Oakville invites you to "stuff a bus" for the food drive. An Oakville Transit bus will make its way down the parade route with volunteers collecting non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army, along with members of the Kin Club and Toronto Rock cheerleaders. They encourage everyone to bring at least one non-perishable food item to the parade. Cash donations will also be accepted. The Oakville Professional Firefighters believe every child deserves at least one special gift and so once again, a crew will be on hand to accept new, unwrapped toys from parade-goers. Gifts for older children are especially needed. The parade reminds those bringing gifts to not forget children older than age 12. Both the Kin Club and the firefighters will be downtown at about 8:30 a.m., just before the official start of the parade and volunteers will be W Santa Claus Parade fosters a spirit of giving in the community accepting donations at that time. The Fun Group of Families and Friends of Falgarwood is celebrating its 19th year of selling red noses for charity. What started as a group of fun-loving clowns enjoying the parade with their children has grown every year and the group hopes to boost its total proceeds to more than $30,000 this year. Charity `red noses' return Dressed as clowns, the group sells its famous "red noses" for $2, with all proceeds supporting Wellspring-Halton. Make sure when purchasing your nose, you get it from these clowns as they are the only group sanctioned by the parade for red nose sales. They are easily identified by their red sweatshirts or red aprons. No visit from Santa would be complete without marching bands playing. This year's line-up will definitely provide entertainment for all ages as they sing along to everyone's favourite Christmas carols. Halton Regional Police Service Pipes & Drums, dressed in their traditional Chisholm tartan, will lead off the Santa Claus Parade. Returning this year are the ever-popular Optimists Alumni Drum Corps, Magnolia Brass, and HMCS Star. The world-famous Top Hat Marching Orchestra from Burlington will be returning to delight the young and young at heart. Entertaining audiences with its musical talent since 1982, the Top Hats is always a parade favourite. Heralding the arrival of Santa, the award-winning group is sure to bring a smile to your face. `Best line-ups ever' "This is one of our best line-ups ever of marching bands," said Val Blackwell, band coordinator for the Oakville Santa Claus Parade. "Be ready to sit back, tap your toes and be entertained by some of the finest musicians in North America." Keep your eye out for another great performance by the enthusiastic White Oaks Secondary School marching band, Oakville's first and only school marching band. It made its successful debut in the 2005 parade and is becoming a tradition -- for the third year, Burlington's M.M. Robinson Drumline will be participating. In addition, the parade is welcoming back the ROTC Toronto (Righteously Outrageous Twirling Corp.) and Oakville Filarmonica Marching Band, and new additions such as Neil McNeil High School Drumline and Malvern Collegiate. Celebrating its 65th anniversary year, the Oakville Santa Claus Parade is a cherished tradition. The 2013 parade starts at 9 a.m. at Lakeshore Road East and Reynolds Street, travelling west on Lakeshore to Kerr Street, north on Kerr and ending at Kerr and Stewart streets.
