That sentiment was shared by those who participated in the Oakville Community Foundation's (OCF) third annual Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Day Friday (Nov. 1). "I love the way that this event has caught the imagination of this town. Grade 5 students Haley Close, left, and Avery Buckley of New Central Public School help load boxes of skates donated during their school's skate drive, organized by student Liam Scott. The equipment was given to the organization Change by YOUth, which collects used skates for children and adults. The skates are then shipped to the First Nations community of Cat Lake, a y-in community 400 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ont. The organization's founder Jack Mogus, 12, was speaking Friday as the good deed was tied to Random Acts of Kindness Day. | photo by Marta Iwanek special to the Beaver Students could begin French Immersion studies at two different elementary grades as part of a series of recommendations in a report headed to the Halton District School Board (HDSB) tonight (Wednesday). The report is online at www.hdsb.ca and trustees will hear delegates on the issue at a special delegation night Monday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. The report's recommendations will go back to the board Nov. 20 for a decision. A steering committee behind the report is also recommending French be taught as a single subject starting in Grade 1 instead of the current Grade 4. French Immersion students currently begin their program in Grade 1, but the board will consider a recommendation for students to also have the chance to begin their French studies in Grade 5 for the start of the 2015-16 school year, provided there is a minimum 25 students registered. The later entry point will accommodate interested students, who have arrived in Halton after Grade 1. The Grade 5 start date will reduce pressure on parents in their decision on whether their children should take French Immersion immediately after Kindergarten -- giving students several years to develop their English language skills before taking on a second language. see Public on p.3 SHUTTERS · Customer Satisfaction Guaranteed · Serving Oakville with Shop at Home Hom ome om e Service Se · Wood & Vinyl Shutters, Supplied & Installed · High High g Quality Quality Quali ty ya at t Affordab Affordable able Pri Pric Prices c CALIFORNIA & PLANTATION ceramics porcelain travertine marble glass natural stone mosaics slate granite quartz FACTORY TILE DEPOT We shop the world so you don't have to! 1360 Speers Road (East of 3rd line) Oakville SHUTTERS ETC. 905.691.4455 www.shuttersetc.ca Authorized Eclipse Shutters Dealer Shop at Home Service FREE Open 7 days/wk! 905-465-1650 Follow us on www.factorytiledepot.ca book Call and esign d e e fr r u o y on consultati BACKSPLASH · BATHROOM · KITCHEN · FIREPLACE · FEATURE WALLS
