Trevor Smith and Bora Tlabar each added four golds, with Smith also earning two silver. Aysia Leckie and Matthew Mac won three races each. Two-event champions included William Anderchek, Tessa Cieplucha, Katie Forrester, Rodrigo Hontoria Arroyo, Emily Ma, Ethan Ma, Camden Malowany, Alexander Miller, Bryanna Samuels, Carly Singh, Kristen Smith, Evan White and Sasha Yeutseyeva. Tristan Ferguson, Anton Kaploun, Callum MacPherson, Michael Antifaoff, Pamir Gurler, Hamza Hamad, Ameena El-Essawi, Collyn Gagne, Hannah Koschanow, Liam Robertson, Kevin Scaife, Morgane Shuster and Rosie Zavaros earned one gold each. Third-ranked OT opened with a 3-0 victory over the Michael Power/St. Joseph's Trojans, then blanked North Hastings 5-0. Logan Hannay, Carolyn Black and Ellie Cookson scored in the first game, with Kirsten Persad and Shona Stuthers combining on the shutout. Hannay and Cookson each scored twice and Brittany Grist notched OT's first goal against North Hastings. Persad recorded the shutout. Oakville was scheduled to play the Pickering Trojans at 9:30 a.m. today (Friday) in its final pool game. The quarterfinals were also scheduled for Friday with semifinals and finals set for Saturday. Figure skaters prepare for sectionals Skate Oakville member Emma Dinda won bronze in the pre-novice Group 3 category at the recent Octoberfest figureskating meet in Barrie. Other notable performers included Sports Briefs Shelby Sondej (fifth, pre-juvenile under-11 Group 4 freeskate), Angelina Maniatis (fifth, pre-juvenile U11 Group 5), Eugene Zhang (fourth, pre-juvenile men), Madison Shaw (fifth, pre-juvenile U14 Group 3) and Samantha Heard (fourth, open solo short dance). Sondej teamed with Keith Dinda to place fourth in pre-juvenile dance. The Octoberfest meet is one of the larger invitational meets on Skate Oakville's competitive calendar. It also serves as a warm-up for the Skate Canada Central Ontario Championships, which will take place Nov. 7-10 in Thornhill. Skate Oakville will send 34 skaters (including four dance teams) to that meet. In other recent competition, Emma Dinda, Melodie Grafton and Shaw won medals at the Isabelle Henderson Memorial Skating Competition in Paris, Ont. Dinda and Grafton claimed silver, with Shaw earning bronze. Adding top-five finishes were Mina Mircetic, Taylor Mackey, Mackenzie Frith, Tess Sjolander and Heather Martin. OMBA names 2014 executive, board The Oakville Minor Baseball Association recently held its annual general meeting to review the 2013 season, elect a new board of directors and appoint the executive team that will lead the organization into 2014. Long-time board member Mike Paciuc was appointed president, taking over the role from Dave Fulton, who is now treasurer. Clark Rymal was appointed vice-president of rep and Kevin Freeman is the vice-president of house league. All executive positions are a one-year term. New board directors include Tony Busseri, Dan Marion, Andreas Papadopoulos, Jim Saufl, Ralph Singh, Danielle Wood and Len Woods. OMBA enjoyed a very successful 2013 season on the field, featuring more than 650 registered players. The rep program won two Central Ontario Baseball Association championships, sent 13 teams to provincials and boasted two provincial champions. Chance for U18 players to learn from national team continued from p.23 Three months ago, he helped Ontario win the national under-18 championship, clinching gold with a 29-21 victory over British Columbia. During that tournament, Tierney also impressed national team coaches enough to earn a spot on the U18 national team that will compete in a two-game exhibition series later this month in Romania. The U18 squad will travel with Canada's 14th-ranked senior team, which will play No. 17 Romania Nov. 16. "It's an opportunity to show (the U18 players) how the national team works and to let them learn, develop and perform in a model as our senior team does," national academy manager Mike Shelley said in a release. Rugby Canada is subsidizing some of the cost of the U18 team's trip, but players are also required to fundraise. Tierney has raised approximately $1,000 through sponsorships and donations so far.
