After graduation, Bonifacio worked at Nelvana doing 2D television animation. "I was burning the midnight oil working on making my 3D reel at night," he says. Then, while at Starz Animation (now Arc Productions), he got his feature film break, when he worked on Gnomeo and Juliet. He then sent his demo reel to Pixar. "One of the animation supervisors on the movie Brave was actually a student of my dad's at Sheridan and saw my reel. I was called for an interview. They said I applied at the right time because they were looking to fill an entry-level position." Bonifacio worked as a crowd animator on Brave and when the movie wrapped up, he was promoted to shot animation. He worked on Monsters University, which was released on DVD Tuesday (Oct. 29). Bonifacio says the movie took about three years from pre-production to completion with up to 80 animators working on it at its peak. Animators are assigned shots to produce. "You have to be good at staying on model because you have to animate it like everyone else will throughout the rest of the movie. "It was awesome working on that project. It was very animated. I know that sounds weird. But Brave was rooted in realism. Monsters University was more inventive and fun. There was a lot of squashing and stretching and playing around with the cartoon-iness of it." Next up for Bonifacio is Inside Out, from the team that created the acclaimed movie Up.
