Roots of Freedom festival celebration Oct. 23-24 Oakville Town Hall and the Oakville Museum will play dual hosts to the seventh annual Roots of Freedom Festival next week. The two-day educational event will run on Wednesday (Oct. 23) at Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd., from 7-8:30 p.m. and Thursday (Oct. 24) at the Oakville Museum, 8 Navy St., from 5-8:30 p.m. The Festival is presented by the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) in partnership with the Oakville Museum and includes performances by artists, museum tours, educational seminar performances, and an African Drumming circle. The focus of the festival will be on local black history and heritage, as well as the diaspora and impact of slavery. "The benefits to all who participate include a better knowledge of the slave trade, its impact and legacy, while generating pride and awareness of the contributions of the early black community who settled in the Oakville area via the Underground Railroad," stated a CCAH press release. Gospel singer John Campbell and African drummer Muhtadi will put on a concert on the Wednesday, while the keynote speaker of the festival will be Karolyn Smardz Frost. Frost is a Canadian historian and the awardwinning author of I've Got a Home in Glory Land. She also won the Governor General Literary Award for non-fiction writing. Funding for the event has been provided in part by Canadian Heritage. The two-day Festival is open to the general public and admission is free.
