www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, October 16, 2013 | 12 Young professionals get their SASS on for a cause Oakville residents Alexander Silver and Jacqueline Di Filippo are bringing the second annual SASS (Silverhearts Annual Saturday Social) Gala to Oakville Saturday (Oct. 19). In benefit of McMaster University Sarcoma Cancer research, SASS will play host to 400 young professionals and benefits the non-profit organization Silverhearts, founded by Alexander and family friend Di Filippo, in honour of Alexander's mother, the late Janice Silver. After experiencing a stomach pain in July of 2011, Janice lost her battle with the rare cancer, angiosarcoma, in October 2011. The 56-year-old Janice lived in Oakville for more than 20 years, and left behind her husband, Oliver, and their sons, Alexander and Jonathan. According to the Silverhearts website, Janice was involved with various charitable works throughout Halton and beyond. She assisted at the Felix Centre, Darling Home for Kids, Toronto Kidsfest, St. James Parish and countless programs at St. Vincent School and St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School. A 10-year volunteer with Milton's Darling Home for Kids, Janice was recognized by the organization as an "integral part of the volunteer team." The goal of the Silverhearts foundation is to raise funds to help the Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton treat others with cancer and beat the devastating disease. To that end, SASS was held for the first time last year. The evening geared toward 20- to 30-year-old Oakville adults who can dress formally, dance and network, all the while supporting the cause, was a resounding success and so it is returning this year. The gala will include live entertainment, a mega raffle and inspiring guest speakers. Among the special guests will be Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, Oakville MP Terence Young and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn. SASS 2013 will be catered by Frank Mazzonetto and the Frankie Fettucine catering team. Guests will be greeted by an array of hors d'oeuvres followed by homemade pizzas, sliders and gourmet cheeses. Singer/songwriter Krista Earle will provide live entertainment. "We are so appreciative to all the sponsors taking part in this year's event. Businesses and individuals in Halton have really been creative, compassionate and generous in their contributions to making this fundraising gala a success. I think all the guests will be amazed at what we've put together," said Philipe Salem, SASS business development manager. SASS 2013 will run from 7:30 p.m. to midnight at the OE Banquet Centre, 2245 Speers Rd. It will be cocktail evening attire and tickets cost $60, which are available by emailing silverheartsfoundationcharity@gmail.com.
