It's time to recognize their dedication and nominate them for the 2013 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Award. This newspaper strongly supports the Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards so we can provide recognition for such outstanding young people who continue to be ne examples of leaders in the Oakville community. The awards program is co-ordinated by the Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA), of which the Oakville Beaver is a member, and sponsored by TD Bank Group and Direct Energy. It is of cially called Making a Difference -- One Star at a Time. Any Ontario resident aged six to 17 years by Nov. 20, 2013 is eligible to be chosen as an Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year. Nominations may come from anyone in the community who wants to recognize a young person's contributions. Please help us by nominating an individual in one of four areas: · A person involved in worthwhile community service. · A special young person contributing to their community while living with a physical or psychological limitation. · An individual who has performed an act of heroism in the past year. · Good kids who show a commitment to make life better for others and do more than is normally expected of someone their age. Up to 12 nominees will be chosen as the nal recipients of the provincial award and will be invited to a special ceremony held in the spring of 2014. Nominate a deserving young person today, and we will personally present them with a certi cate of recognition and showcase their contributions in this newspaper. Leading up to our Terry Fox walk/run on Friday, Sept. 27, we had been talking about Terry all week and the fundraising drive was in full gear. On Thursday, Sept. 26, two lovely students, Mia Cocca and Amreen Dhillon, came to me and asked if I had any ideas of how they could "do more" to help the campaign and raise money. I told them that when I was a kid, we set up a lemonade stand in front of our house to earn money for various causes. They looked at each other and said that was a great idea and that they were going to spend their scheduled play date on Sunday selling lemonade outside to earn money for the Terry Fox Foundation. Well, they did indeed. All told, they raised more than $100 for the foundation and proudly brought in all their donation money rst thing on Monday morning. It warms my heart to see such acts of humanitarianism and sel essness in my students. It truly makes me proud to be their teacher. Though I know they do not expect to be recognized in any way, but the amazing feeling of accomplishment they must have, I felt that your readers may wish to see our youths giving back to the community, one lemonade at a time.
